The bamboo boat, a traditional vessel, has long been an integral part of the lives of fishermen in Ha Long Bay. This humble boat serves not only as the primary means of transportation through the waterways but also as a cherished symbol of the local culture. As Ha Long Bay transformed into a world-renowned tourist destination, the bamboo boat has evolved into a unique tourism service, offering visitors the opportunity to explore enchanting caves, majestic islands, and experience the simple life of fishing communities.
Over the past two decades, bamboo boat tours have become an indispensable activity for travelers exploring Ha Long Bay. Beyond providing memorable experiences, this service has also become a stable source of income for many fishing families, contributing to the improvement of the local community’s livelihood.
Bamboo Boat Experience in Ha Long Bay
When visiting attractions like fishing villages, Ba Hang Cave, or Luon Cave in Ha Long Bay, tourists have the option of kayaking or taking a bamboo boat to explore these destinations. While kayaking is an adventurous activity suitable for active adults, bamboo boats are an ideal choice for families with children.
Each bamboo boat can accommodate 4 to 6 people. The boat rower, usually a local fisherman, not only serves as a guide but also as a knowledgeable storyteller, introducing the beauty and significance of each destination. Along the journey, they will take visitors to community centers, fishing village models, and provide insights into the local way of life. Additionally, tourists will be led into majestic caves, admire the magnificent limestone mountains, and discover hidden lagoons. Immerse yourself in the fresh sea air, capture beautiful moments, and engage in conversations with the enthusiastic and sincere fishermen who are always ready to share and guide.
Due to the climate in Northern Vietnam, the ideal time for bamboo boat exploration in Ha Long Bay is from August to June of the following year. This period offers calm seas and no storms. Although winter can be cold, the activity itself is not strenuous, ensuring a comfortable experience. From late June to the end of July is the rainy and stormy season, and boat trips may be postponed or canceled due to safety concerns. However, if the weather is favorable, tourists can still participate. During summer, with high temperatures and intense sunlight, visitors should prepare appropriate clothing and gear.

Reviews of bamboo boat locations:
Currently, Luon Cave and Ba Hang are located on routes 1 and 2 of the Ha Long Bay day tour. Visitors can easily find cruises for these routes at Ha Long International Passenger Port and Tuan Chau Port. Some popular cruises that visit these locations include Ambassador II and Sea Octopus. These are high-end day cruises, so the price per person is around 1.3 million VND. Alternatively, visitors can choose traditional group cruises for 440,000 VND for route 1 and 490,000 VND for route 2 (excluding bamboo boat services).
The remaining locations are not included in the Ha Long Bay day tour, so visitors need to choose an overnight cruise on the bay if they want to experience bamboo boats at those attractions. However, please note that each cruise has a different itinerary, so you need to carefully check the itinerary to see if it includes the attractions you want to visit. Some popular cruises include Ambassador I and Sea Star Cruise.
